Dr. Yoo Ki-Pung

The 4th President of KINGS

I am honored to be inaugurated as the 4th President of KINGS and today I would like to talk to you about dynamic innovation and a hopeful future. In this rapidly changing world, I hope that KINGS can serve as the game changer and become the center of education that contributes to sustainable development of the Earth's ecosystem. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to KINGS board of directors and Chairman Chung Jae-hoon, who invited me to become a member of KINGS community, as well as KHNP, KEPCO and related companies, dear professors, faculty members, students and alumni of KINGS. In addition, I would also like to express my appreciation to the former presidents who have led the development of KINGS since its inception.

The idea of creating a world-leading nuclear energy graduate program was first conceived by the National Atomic Energy Commission in 2009 who led the efforts in exporting nuclear power technology. In March 2012, KINGS formally opened doors to cultivate domestic and foreign nuclear experts and has achieved the reputation as a “small but strong university” ever since. The many attempts and glimpses of possibilities KINGS has experienced over that period lead me to believe that we can start anew for the next decade. I hope that we can use this opportunity to examine ourselves, reassess our vision for the future, and find new opportunities for open research and innovative practice so that KINGS may have glorious 20th, 50th, and 100th anniversaries of the school after we are long gone.

We are all aware that universities around the world are facing many challenges in the 21st century, and KINGS is no exception. Those challenges must be dealt with in a timely and effective manner in order to continue to make progress on achieving sustainable nuclear energy development. As you all know, traditional boundaries, whatever it may be, are breaking down due to the fourth industrial revolution and information revolution. In particular, universities that learn to harness and create advanced information are in a constant state of competition in this hyper-connected era. In such an environment, where everything is more or less transparent, like a fish in a bowl, if you are unable to maintain a leadership position, you face the cruel reality of extinction. Thus, university as well as high-tech industries can never be free from the whirlwind of disruptive innovation.

In order to survive such a cross-border competition between universities, KINGS must be ready with an open mind and practice innovation on a daily basis. The fact that we must open up a new future with change and innovation is nowhere more evident than in the unprecedented situation created by COVID-19. Many experts tell us that going back to the old way of life might never happen. Most likely universities are no exception to this new normal. Even before the pandemic, numerous cutting-edge university models have been developed and put into practice around the world. In line with this revolution in the higher learning sector, KINGS must also build an open system that goes beyond closed boundaries.

I strongly recommend that each of us constantly keep up-to-date with the latest innovations while actively collaborating with advanced high-tech university culture. We are a small but strong university, so I believe that it is possible.

I would also like to use this occasion to consider the noble purpose of creating the only graduate program specialized in nuclear power in Korea. KINGS is a university that collaborates and develops cutting-edge technologies and sound policies related to energy against the backdrop of the global Green New Deal. It is also an educational institution that must possess the expertise to communicate with a part of the community that embraces a sentiment based on unscientific belief concerning nuclear technology. As is well known, the more advanced countries become, the higher the demand for electricity. Modern human civilization has taken on a form that requires an astronomical amount of electricity, and the path we are on is now irreversible. One of the priority tasks of the modern civilization is to supply electricity at a low price to keep the industrial production churning and improve the quality of life for the people.

Additionally, in preparation for the 2050 International Convention on Carbon Neutralization the production and consumption process of electric energy must achieve zero carbon emissions in order to remain an advanced country. And most advanced countries share that nuclear power is an essential energy source to achieve zero carbon. And our very own KINGS is the only university ready to undertake this tall task faced by human civilization. Depending on the achievements of our research and education, significant contributions can be made not only to our country but also to the entire human civilization, which will surely place KINGS on an international pedestal of practical study.

Dear KINGS Community!
I am honored to be selected through the fair competition process even though I was an outsider. This vote of confidence has imbued me with a greater sense of leadership and responsibility to bring about innovation and change at KINGS.

I majored in engineering Thermodynamics and have been faithful to my calling as a professor of engineering, including education, research, domestic and international academic activities, venture startups, etc. People around me also know me as a person who loves work and is oriented towards change and innovation. I consider the position of president at KINGS as my last volunteer opportunity as chief executive officer of an organization, and I am ready to tackle all challenges that may arise at KINGS. Staying on the right path, we will together create KINGS where everyone strives to work better and research more than they do now.

Dear KINGS family!
As the Chief Engineer of KINGS, I am ready to set sail with you in the rough seas. Smaller universities have the advantage of agility to respond faster to risks compared to larger competitors. I am thoroughly committed to fulfilling my duty as the bearer of your high will to bring about change and innovation, and that will allow KINGS to achieve a prestigious status in the world. I will be ready to communicate openly with you 24 hours a day. I welcome your encouragement, criticism, and suggestions without reservation. Of course, the path of innovation and leap forward will not be without discomfort at times. When we are willing to endure together to achieve a greater good, KINGS will be able to navigate confidently through the rough waves of the education revolution into the sea of hope. Together, we can do it. Let us cultivate such hope together. I wish that the success of KINGS and the happiness of each member of KINGS community are one and the same.

Dear KINGS community,
I ask that you put your trust in me and run together with me. I solemnly pledge before you that I will faithfully carry out all my responsibilities as KINGS President. Thank you.
