Introduction To the Courses

Integrated Electricity Resource Planning

Introduction
Wien Automatic System Planning Package (WASP) is one of the most widely used models in developing countries for power system planning. Within constraints defined by the user, WASP determines the optimal long-term expansion plan for a power generating system. Constraints may include limited fuel availability, emission restrictions, system reliability requirements and other factors. Optimal expansion is determined by minimizing discounted total costs. In WASP the optimum expansion plan is defined in terms of minimum discounted total costs. Each possible sequence of power plants that could be added to the system (expansion plan or expansion policy) and that meets the selected constraints, is evaluated by means of a cost function composed of: capital investment costs, fuel costs, operation and maintenance costs, fuel inventory costs, salvage value of investments and cost of energy demand not served. The Model for Energy Supply Strategy Alternatives and their General Environmental Impact (MESSAGE) combines technologies and fuels to construct so-called "energy chains", making it possible to map energy flows from supply (resource extraction) to demand (energy services). The model can help design long term strategies by analyzing cost optimal energy mixes, investment needs and other costs for new infrastructure, energy supply security, energy resource utilization, rate of introduction of new technologies (technology learning), environmental constraints. The tool simulates the development of a complete energy system and provides a convenient platform for modelling and analyzing nuclear energy systems (NESs), as it can efficiently model nuclear technologies with their specific features. Among other things, the tool can help produce a description of an entire NES with time dependent parameters for long-term planning; confirm the feasibility of a NES through correlation and consistency of all NES components, taking into account all constraints and boundary conditions imposed on the system.

Course Objectives

ㆍTo understand the basic concepts and techniques for National Energy Planning.

ㆍTo find an optimal expansion plan for a power generating system over a long period and within the constraints defined by the planner.

ㆍPerforming the economic analysis for the optimum energy Mixture and NPP’s competitiveness

Micro Grid Platform and Business

Introduction
Microgrids are gradually expanding due to response to climate change, development of renewable energy technologies, and increased demand for eco-electric energy. Microgrids consist of small power supplies and batteries, power consumption and monitoring/control equipment. Usually operated in connection with the utility electric power system, but in case of accident, the micro grid operates independently, thus maintaining high reliability of the power supply. In addition, microgrids can be built in areas where power infrastructure is not sufficiently distributed to self-sufficient power, thereby reducing investment in large power generation facilities and power distribution facilities. The students understand the microgrid components and discuss the concepts of optimal design from an economic perspective and operation from a technical perspective. In addition, the students will experience a lot of micro grid phenomena with the H/W oriented simulator.

Course Objectives

ㆍTo understand the basic concepts and techniques for renewable energy

ㆍTo find an optimal fuel mix in micro grid by HOMER

ㆍPerforming the technical phenomena analysis and understanding of microgrid

ㆍTo gain practical insights on microgrid business model
